249 Nameplate SIR LAUNCELOT, ex Southern Railway King Arthur Class Locomotive, one of a small batch of just 10 Locomotives built at Eastleigh Works in March 1925. Numbered 455, later 30455 by BR, in the series 448 to 457 (30448 to 30457), these 10 were unique in the numbering series and also in the fact that they received G14 Drummond Tenders. It was for many years a Salisbury Loco and by 1950 had found its way to Exmouth Junction. Throughout most of the 50s it was allocated to Nine Elms and in 1958 was moved to Basingstoke. Withdrawal took place from here in April 1959 and it was cut up at Eastleigh just one month later. The nameplate is in wonderful, cared for condition, nicely polished yet retaining the character of clear bolt marks and numerous knocks and dings from 34 years of service. The rear is in absolutely original, untouched condition and clearly stamped 455. As far as King Arthur Nameplates go, this one is probably one of, if not the, most well known and desirable of all names from the Round Table. Also included Smokebox Numberplate 30455.
