Before the advent of electric lighting, Railway stations around the UK used oil or gas lighting. Lamp posts adorned the platforms in regimented rows, each topped with an ornate Station lamp top specific in style and design to the company that utilised them. Many also had wall mounted lamps along platforms where buildings and canopies prevented the use of posts. It would be a regular job for the lamp-man or lamp-boy to ensure the lamps were lit every day. Many survive and those that are complete with the internal reservoir are most sought after and ones that still retain their original station name in the form of a glass or paper panel more so.
