Worksplate, LNER fully titled 9 x 5, cast iron construction, number 9382 Cowlairs Works 1909. Ex North British Railways Class D33 4-4-0, originally numbered 382 of which only twelve were built between 1909 and 1910 (NBR Class K). The first LNER number in 1924 was 9382 and in 1946, it became 2463 and was numbered 62463 by BR, although didn't survive long enough to actually carry the number before withdrawal in March 1948 from Bathgate depot. Originally shedded at Eastfield, this loco would have worked local trains services out of Glasgow and Edinburgh. The introduction of Thompson B1's saw their rapid demise. A fine, early LNER plate from a scarce class.

Early Engraving of Isambard Kingdom Brunel by D.J. Pound (floruit 1842-1877) from a photograph by John Jabez Edwin Mayall (1810-1901). This stunning item, tastefully mounted in a glazed frame, is museum quality. Indeed, many works by Pound, after photographs by Mayall, appear in the National Portrait Gallery including an example of this very one. It is undated but confirmed by the NPG to be 1859. Great Northern Railway Waiting Room Mirror. A quite wonderful item measuring 29 x 39 with a substantial, oak surround with stepped lower edge, all beatifully polished. Has 'GNR' branded into the rear. Recovered from Ware Station where it was, at some time, transferred from Hertford Station.

LNWR, unusually large, brass and porcelain Coat Hangers, qty 3. Ornate design, two are similar, the third, which has been cleaned, slightly different. Each one is around 9 in length and designed to have two hook spaces. Delightful items, the like of which we have never seen before. Originated from the Wolverhampton area and were quite possibly from an old LNWR Signal Box or station/offices at Wolverhampton High Level.

Cabside Numberplate 6316. Ex GWR 2-6-0 Mogul Locomotive built Swindon January 1921. First allocated to Wolverhampton, it quickly found its way to Croes Newydd where it remained for most of its working days plying the ex Cambrian Railway routes. Finally withdrawn in July 1962 from Llanelly depot. An absolutely stunning brass cabside with original paint, including traces of the one time orange lining. Loco and Boiler stamping in top and bottom rim, this is by far the best example seen interms of ex loco.

London North Eastern Railway, GER pattern, 3 aspect, Sliding Knob Handlamp. Clearly stamped PETERBORO EAST 185 on the reducing cone. Both red and blue glass aspects intact, original reflector and reservoir carrying a BR burnner. Unrestored and having much evidence of original, green paint.

Signal Box Brass Cased 250 Ohm Relay. A substantial item from Wolverhampton High Level area. It still has the original, LMS lead seal attached and a small, traffolite plate 'DH 112'. Together with a delightful, cased Signal Arm Indicator Gauge. A simple, yet extremely effective device that would have clipped onto the signal arm and accurately shown the angle whilst 'On' and the angle when 'Off'. Had there been any misalignment, the indicator would show 'Wrong' and the angle of error. Looks very much as though it is still in working order. A pair of very nice items from the Wolverhampton area.

Fraserburgh and St Combs Light Railway Plan & Sections dated May 1897 and bearing the name of the Engineer, Patrick Moir Barnett. This contains 1 Sheet showing the entire railway and Inclines through the Parishes of Fraserburgh, Rathen and Lonmay. Together with a similar, but for the Great North Of Scotland Railway dated November 1897. This one contains 9 Sheets to include: Widenening & Improving the Railway between Keith and Dufftown, Longmorn to Elgin, Elgin to Lossie Junction and Park to Banchory. Also Widening at Fraserburgh, Diversion of Railway at Rothiemay and Additional Lands at Aberdeen. Both are 30 x 22 in size and are of extreme historical importance.

The glass front requires attaching to the hinges so be careful when viewing. Together with a Double Royal Poster Frame without glass but ready to take your favourite poster for displaying. Additionally, a sloping, glass top wooden display cabinet measuring approximately 17 x 21.

Extremely good condition with just the odd scratch here and there. A very scarce totem and first time at auction in this face-drilled configuration.

LNER 12 Drop Dial Clock manufactured by Seth Thomas, USA. Ex MANOR POWIS Signalbox between Cambus and Stirling on the original Stirling & Dunfermline Railway. The clock is in working order but the glass is missing from the bottom door. Inside the door is the original Seth Thomas Instruction sheet pasted to the backboard and also the small LNER numberplate 15879. Accompanying is a couple of colour photographs of the signalman, Jim Drysdale with the very clock in the background (painted in Scottish light blue colour).

GWR Office Messengers Leather Bag for carrying Wages Documents between the Gas Works Office and Carriage & Wagon Works Wages Office Swindon. Circa 1930, this is a wonderful item that has the GWR Roundel impressed into the leather in less than 4 places. Interior strap and buckle intact but the outside strap has a little loss. Found inside are three, GWR circulars for Banbury, Leamington and Princes End.

Smokebox Numberplate 90538. Ex WD 2-8-0 Austerity Locomotive introduced in 1943 with the original number of 77068 and purchased from the War Department by British Railways in 1948. Originally allocated to 36B Mexborough but by 1953 it was firmly entrenched at 36A Doncaster where it remained right up until withdrawal in April 1966. It was stored at Doncaster until September of that year and then cut up at Drapers before the year end. Very scarce Doncaster casting, it is in stunning ex loco condition, oozing with the smoke steam and grime of the dirty, yet somehow quite wonderful, locomotive shed.

LNER D/R Poster Season Tickets On The L.N.E.R. Save Time And Money. An absolutely stunning Poster with image by H.M. Bateman dated 1928. The comical image shows a Dapper dandy holding his season ticket and walking briskly past a queue of travellers waiting at the Booking Office window. The large clock at the top of the image reads 8:49 and the train waiting in the platform has a departure board stating 'Next Train 8:50'. The irate travellers in the queue include a Golfer togged out in tweed plus-fours and carrying his golf clubs. A super poster in extremely good condition and in an old, glazed frame. Ideal for the railway collector, golf collector, ticket collector, clock collector or just as a fantastic conversational piece. NOTE: H M Bateman 1887 - 1970: - 20th century cartoonist and caricaturist born in Australia and brought to England when 2 years of age. He died on Gozo aged 81. During his most prolific years he drew for most of the quality periodicals. Through line and tone he was able to convey the full range of human emotion to maximum comic effect. Frustrated by ill health from army service in the first World War he contributed by raising the spirits of officers and men alike through his inspirational drawings. Last shed allocation Gloucester from where withdrawal took place in September 1962. Scrapped at Cashmore's, Newport. A nicely balanced plate with original paint on splasher and backplate.

Totem, BR(M) RADLETT, H/F. Ex Midland Railway station between St Albans City and Elstree on the Midland Main Line. Some top and bottom mounting flange damage where they were bent over for some reason and a couple of small drilled holes in the top white line, barely noticeable. A few tiny 'dings between the 'R' and 'A', otherwise good colour and shine.

Ex 421 Class 0-4-0 150 HP McLaren engined locomotive No 3, built 28th March 1957 for use at the Royal Ordnance Factory Puriton, Somerset.This was a wartime chemical and explosives factory, opened 1940, serving the GWR Taunton - Bristol line near Huntspill. Cabside Numberplate 4291, C/I construction. Ex GWR 2-8-0T built Swindon 1921 and allocated new to Newport. By the late 1950's it was at Aberbeeg from where withdrawal took place in September 1962. Only 14 of this class of 100 powerful locomotives carried C/I Cabside Numberplates, 4286 to 4299making this an extremely scarce plate.

Totem, BR(W) DAWLISH, F/F. Ex GWR station on the South Devon Coast where rail meets sea along the famous and wonderfully picturesque 'sea-wall'. The totem is in lovely condition with deep colour and shine and no fading. It has a few expertly repaired chips which doesn't detract at all. A very rare opportunity to acquire this quality totem. Chances are, if ever another comes to light, it won't be in this condition. The severity of the local enviroment would have taken its toll but this one looks as though it was well protedted beneath a canopy or shelter. Quite wonderful and only ever once before at major auction, 17 years ago (and that was a rough one)

BR Station Platform Lamp Diffuser HARROW & WEALDSTONE, maroon raised lettering on opaque white background. Excellent example measuring 69 x 9 which was the regulation size for these along the West Coast Main Line. They did of course, replace Totems on many of the stations and when they come complete with metal rim, as this one does, they make stunning light covers for the workshop, garage or railway room. This location, north of Euston was the location of the train disaster in 1952 when Duchess 'City Of Glasgow' ran through a red signal, into the rear of a commuter train. The resulting mayhem was exacerbated by a double-headed express, headed by the Turbomotive Princess Royal 'Princess Anne' and Jubilee 'Winward Islands', ploughing into the wreckage.

LNER Enamel Station Destination Board Signs from Walton-On-Naze station. Quantity nine altogether arranged in a temporary wooden frame as follows: All Stations; Frinton; Colchester; Chelmsford; St. Botolphs; Hythe; Wivenhoe; Shenfield; Romford. A wonderful Essex collection of some scarcity. Each measures 15 in length and all except Frinton, which has some damage, are in very good condition.

Totem, BR(M) TAMWORTH, F/F. Ex Midland Railway station (High Level) and LNWR station (Low Level) between Birmingham and Derby and Rugby and Stafford. Both levels had similar totems so it is impossible to say which one this came from. No matter, either way, it was the 'Mecca' for all spotters in the 50's and early 60's. Extremely good condition with no face damage just slight signs of mottling.

British Railways Western Region experimental black and white Enamel Sign NO PARKING. Measures 36 x 12, F/F with a few scratches and a small touch-in above the 'R'. Extremely scarce, possibly unique because these experimental signs with different style, chunky lettering, were only used at 4 stations. Maybe only one had a No Parking sign in situ.

LNER Playing Cards. Two sets in a red leather box, the first, in colour, is Whitby, the second in green sepia, is Lowestoft. The packs were scrutinised before sealing and both sets are almost pristine and are guaranteed complete including one Joker and one Blank each. The back pictures are displayed and if turned over, the Ace of Spades show on both the full Railway title and Waddingtons manufacture.

Shedplate, 81A Old Oak Common. Alloy construction, this was used as a place mat at Swindon Works.Definitely a Swindon casting but doubtful whether it was carried. Together with a brass Carriage Toilet Door Mechanism, also from Swindon Works.
Mexican Hat Gas Lamp with brown enamel shade and complete with glass globe. Ex Hereford Goods Shed, the item comes with the original and very ornate cantilever support arm. The only bit missing is the short conduit to the lamp top. This could easily be replaced.

Titled 'R R' with two small dashes beneath, the text reads: 'Any Person Omitting To Shut And Fasten This Gate After Using It Is Liable To A Penalty Of Forty Shillings. An incredible scarcity, found in the grounds of an old cottage not far from Pengam.

GWR cardboard Jigsaw 'Lost In Transit', made by the Chad Valley Company. Made up to show completeness and exceptional condition. The original box accompanies this rare puzzle that was only issued to Staff and, unlike the wooden jigsaws, never for sale to the general public. Image shows a very disappointed little boy and girl looking rather forlornly at their damaged King George V GWR Locomotive. Within the jigsaw are the words Lost In Transit! Smokebox Numberplate 41304. Ex LMS 2-6-2T Locomotive, built Crewe 1952 and allocated to 71A, Eastleigh with the batch of 30 of these going to the Southern Region. By the mid 50's, the loco was transferred to Bath Green Park and trundled the Somerset & Dorset for many years. Well photographed of course, with fine pictures in Steam On The Somerset & Dorset Bradford Barton; The Somerset & Dorset by Ivo Peters and The Somerset & Dorset In The 50's also Ivo Peters. Finally withdrawnin 1966. A wonderful Smokebox Plate, bought by the Vendor from The Roundhouse in Harrow many, many years ago.

GWR Silverplated Toast Rack of exquisite design and shape. Manufactured by Elkington, this 6 slice rack is basically oval in shape with four balled feet and an extremely ornate lifting ring, almost identical to filligree. Between the ring and the centre rung of the rack, is a thick shield, one side of which is inscribed GWR Dining Cars within the Buckle Crest. Undoubtedly from a 1st Class Dining Car and extremely desirable in this immaculate condition.

Also a bundle of whole Edmondson Tickets with some Seasons together with a GWR Steel carriage Key, a Signal Box 'Not In Use' brass catch and a small Glass Ashtray etched with the GWR roundel beneath, qty 4 large, framed (not glazed) steam painting prints, a GWR 'Aids To Signalmen On Double Lines Of Railway' hanging card notice. Finally, a well folded quartet of posters, to include a Quad Royal Western Modernisation Margam Yard, a couple of Letterpress Lapworth & Knowle and a Rail Museum York. In all, a great lot to sort through.

Smokebox Numberplate 90559. Ex WD 2-8-0 Austerity Locomotive introduced in 1943 with the original number of 77095 and purchased from the War Department by British Railways in 1948. Certainly a much travelled loco, initially allocated to 51B Newport but by 1950 had found its way to 35A New England. By late 1957, it had wandered to 31B March but didn't remain there for long before moving to 32A Norwich. It ended up at 36A Doncaster where it was finally cut up and the snmaokebox numberplate recovered from there. Restored.

GWR Signal Box, Tyers Mahogany Cased Train Describer ex Barrs Court Junction Signal Box Hereford. A magnificent and substantial item in what appears to be full working order and complete. The front, top segmented dial is fully populated with the following:- Pass Train Ex Shrewsbury For Barrs Court: Pass Train Ex Worcester For Barrs Court: Freight Train Ex Shrewsbury For Barrs Court:Freight Train Ex Worcester For Barrs Court: Freight Train Ex Shrewsbury For Barton: Freight Train Ex Worcester For Barton: Freight Train For Moorfields. The lower indicator mimics these of course and when the peg is inserted and the clockwork mechanism activated, the appropriate indication is sent to the next box.Apparently, knowledge of this instrument was previously not known. Quite wonderful.

BR(E) Enamel Station Direction Sign SOUTHEND SHOEBURYNESS, F/F and with right facing feathered arrow. Measures 36 x 18 and although having some edge chipping and minor face scratches, it is extremely rare. Essex stations such as these two were fitted with totems but all the Southend ones seem to have been destroyed and only one Shoeburyness is known.

Station Office Hand Embossers, a wonderful, almost identical pair. The first embosses the following: STATION FOR PASSENGERS { CHORLEY WOOD MET. OR GT. CENTRAL RY. and the second STATION FOR GOODS { BOXMOOR L.M.S. CONSIGNED DELIVERED HOME. . Steel construction and certainly made to last. The unusual finish and identical appearance obviously confused the poor clerk who had to use them, so, the latter was annotated with permanent ink 'GOODS' on the front foot. Feel free to try these on a blank are of your catalogue.

Bristol & Exeter Railway large format Bye-Laws & Regulations notice on linen and mounted in a glazed frame. A wonderful and very early item having a hand-written date of 24th February 1869 and signed by the Secretary and the Assistant Secretary of the Board of Trade. Impressed with the company seal. Measures 21 x 26, surprisingly having only minor damage. An historic item indeed.

Worksplate, North British Railway Queens Park Works, brass diamond number 22055 dated 1919. Ex R.O.D. 2-8-0 Locomotive with 4' 8 diameter driving wheels, built under order number L704 and originally numbered 1997. One of 33 on loan to the NER and shedded at Hull Dairycoates ex works in 1919. Returned to R.O.D. in August 1921 and stored at Royd Green near Leeds. Purchased by the GWR in 1925 and taken in to stock in 1927 becoming GWR number 3081 only to be withdrawn a couple of years later in 1929. A quite historic worksplate.

GWR 4-2-2 Locomotive centre wheel splasher emblems. Comprising circular brass GWR Coat Of Arms in the centre, then on the left the 'Wing' emblem and on the right, the 'Snake in Arms of Liberty'. All three were kept at the MPD Offices at Wolverhampton from where they were obtained by the Vendor. These are not reproductions but actual items cast by the GWR. Mounted for display on a wooden boars. On removal from the board, it is likely that the circular plaque was never fitted to a loco but the two individual items probably were. British Road Services Playing Cards, 2 packs contained within a maroon, felt box. One set is still in orinal box wrapper and un-opened. The other set, has been scrutinised and is complete with the addition of 2 Jokers and a Spare. The un-opened pack has a green back with the Lion holding Wheel BRS emblem top and bottom in gold. The opened pack is similar but with a maroon background.

GWR Mahogany Cased Signal Box Double Slotting Instrument from the Wolverhampton area. A stunning instrument of considerable rarity. This one controlled the Stafford Road and Dunstall Park mechanism and bears the brass plate stamped with the number 29. Beneath the double indicator, there are 4 oval plates, two either side, with a switch to toggle between 'Battery Off / Battery On'.

A set of Great Western Railway Brass Letters ex Taunton Station. These were displayed outside the main building, above the entrance and similar were utilised at Leamington Spa. Very much Art Deco and extremely rare. The historical importance is immense. The actual font design was by Edward Johnston. Johnston abandoned his medical studies in Edinburgh and set off for London to go in for art. He was put in charge of 'illuminating' classes at the Central School of Arts and Crafts and he is considered the 'father' of the 20th century revival of formal lettering. His most well-known design is the block lettering for London Underground, which is based on Classical Roman proportions. All 19 brass letters are there.

LNWR Signal Box Combined Home Signal Repeater and Lamp In/Lamp Out Indicator encased in a 'tombstone' C/I surround and clearly stamped 'L.N.W.R. Electrical Dept Crewe Ind No 1 No 4152. A magnificent, rare instrument with the lower quadrant signal in plain red and two small port-hole apertures within the dial showing 'In' 'Out' and 'Wrong'. A small ivorine plate at the top indicates 'JAA 886'. Recovered from the Wolverhampton area.

Nameplate SIR LAUNCELOT, ex Southern Railway King Arthur Class Locomotive, one of a small batch of just 10 Locomotives built at Eastleigh Works in March 1925. Numbered 455, later 30455 by BR, in the series 448 to 457 (30448 to 30457), these 10 were unique in the numbering series and also in the fact that they received G14 Drummond Tenders. It was for many years a Salisbury Loco and by 1950 had found its way to Exmouth Junction.Throughout most of the 50's it was allocated to Nine Elms and in 1958 was moved to Basingstoke. Withdrawal took place from here in April 1959 and it was cut up at Eastleigh just one month later.The nameplate is in wonderful, 'cared for' condition, nicely polished yet retaining the character of clear bolt marks and numerous knocks and dings from 34 years of service. The rear is in absolutely original, untouched condition and clearly stamped '455'. As far as King Arthur Nameplates go, this one is probably one of, if not the, most well known and desirable of all names from the Round Table. Also included Smokebox Numberplate 30455. Ex Southern Railway 4-6-0 King Arthur Class Locomotive SIR LAUNCELOT. Smokebox has been tastefully face restored and the rear has been cleaned. Bears the familiar Eastleigh Triangle within the casting, on the rear.

GWR Signal Inspectors Voltmeter/Ammeter manufactured by Weston Electrical Instruments, Newark N.J.. A substantial, wooden cased instrument with central 'banana' shaped indicating dial surrounded by a quite ornate brass panel and multi level measuring connectors in two vertical rows. Although not marked GWR, it has a wonderful, ivorine plate attached inside the lid indicating Telegraph Inspector G.W.R. Signal Dept Worcester A wonderful instrument, the likes of which have not been seen previously and likewise, the accompanying instrument which is a bakelite AC Voltmeter, also made by the same company. This too is quite stunning and although not marked railway in any way, was owned by an ex Worcester Area Signallling Inspector.

GWR large Signal Lamp, stamped with company initials on chimney and fitted inside top with a Tyers circular Bi-metallic device which would have been connected to the Lamp In/Out Indicator back in the signal box. No interior vessel but comes with a different type of copper based interior that doesn't fit the larger lamp.

Totem, BR(W) CAERLEON, F/F. Ex GWR station between Newport High Street and Llantarnam, historic Roman Town north of the River Usk, closed 30th April 1962. With the town's legendary link with King Arthur and believed to be the original Camelot, it is rather appropriate to have such a wonderful totem in the same auction as the Sir Launcelot Nameplate. The station closed forever in April 1962. Superb condition with wonderful, deep shine and no face chips whatsoever.

Cabside Numberplate 8742, brass construction. Ex contractor built 0-6-0PT, built by W.G. Bagnall Ltd. In 1931 under Works Number 2439/31. Allocated to Old Oak Reading, Gloucester and Stourbridge under the GWR and remained at Stourbridge throughout until withdrawal in September 1962. Cut up at Swindon in February 1963. Original receipt, copies of the Engine Record Card and various correspondence accompany.

Firemans Call Box, almost certainly of LMS origin, mounted on a wooden plinth. This ex lineside instrument was recovered from the Wolverhampton area and is basically a tombstone shaped, C/I item that sat at the base of a home signal. Used by the Loco Fireman when a train was halted at the signal. It was a device to alert the signalman of the trains presence and would have been interlocked with the block instrument to protect the rear of the train. The unit is clearly embossed Firemans Call Box, Press Plunger. If Hooter Does Not Sound - Go To Box. A real rarity.

Totem, BR(M) COUNDON ROAD, F/F. Ex LNWR station, just west of Coventry on the Rugby to Birmingham New Street line (London & Birmingham Railway) There were only 6 totems on this station and the Vendor, along with a friend, obtained the best 4 from the signalman when they were taken down and thrown in one of the station rooms. This one is almost mint and certainly a great rarity, the one previously at auction was not so good.

Terence Cuneo Limited Edition Print of the Eurostar at the newly commissioned Waterloo International Station in 1994. A limited edition of 850, this was a special painting that Cuneo was able to complete before his death in 1996. The framed and glazed print comes in its original Eurostar Boxand has never really been opened. Class 31 Engine Identity Plate 'Mirrlees' stamped with the number 485117. Serious problems were experienced with the original Mirrlees power units and from 1964 the decision was made to re-engine the entire class with English Electric power units rated similar to those fitted to the English Electric Type 3s (Class 37). The first example to be re-engined was D5677. Also with this lot, an alloy English Electric Plate, removed from D318 after secondment for filming duties for the Great Train Robbery film 'Robbery' in 1967, now of course preserved at Tyseley.

King George V Golden Jubilee 1977 Limited Edition Alloy Plaque. Numbered 854 out of 1000, this is the scarce edition, cast at Swindon to commemorate the visit in 1927 to Baltimore for the Fair Of The Iron Horse. It also states that the loco is now operated in conjunction with BR by Bulmers Cider Co. Hereford. Tastefully mounted on a wooden plinth with the original Certificate carefully taped to the back and hanging hooks with hanger chord already fitted.

Signal Box Register for Heck dated June 1956 to October 1956. East Coast Main Line location near Selby and site of the of the 2001 train crash. The register records happier times when, among others, Gresley Pacifics roared past this box in daily processions to and from Kings Cross.

Given to a young Platform Ticket collector who went to Smethwick Rolfe Street station to obtain a platform ticket only to be told there weren't any. His disappointment prompted the Booking Clerk to take pity on him. (The signs were all down at this time and stored in the Bookinmg Office)
