246 Great Western Railway top lever locomotive whistle numbered 3555 on the operating lever and stamped GWR on the bottom mounting nut. New research and photographic evidence has come to light thanks to Mark Jepson and Cannon Brian Arman. The Great Western had some locos fitted with these top lever whistles in a short period between 1929-30 as an experiment to try a keep the steam exiting higher up as the standard whistle steam was sometimes obscuring the drivers view, these were quickly superseded by the standard whistles being housed in a steel whistle shield. Photographs exist of 7200, 7201, 4901, 2251 and 6743 with these style of whistles. Stands 15in tall including wooden plinth and has a bell diameter of 3.5in. A super and historic item not seen before although a smaller size one is known to survive.
