Anyone who undertook a rail journey in an older, compartmental carriage will remember the colourful, framed pictures that hung above their heads and the heads of fellow passengers sat opposite, these are known as carriage prints. Exotic destinations tantalised the traveller, from Devon & Cornwall to the Scottish Highlands; from Northumberland to North Wales; from the Kent Coast to the Lake District. These images were prints produced from original paintings by prolific artists such as Frank Mason; Claude Buckle; Jack Merriott; Leonard Squirrell; Norman Wilkinson and many, many more. Some were Maps and Advertising prints but they were always something that caught the eye. Like all categories, there are rarities within but the overall beauty of carriage prints is the ease of display of an attractive, timeless print. Landscapes Under The Luggage Rack by Greg Norden is a definitive reference book, profusely illustrated and detailed.
