Almost wholly confined to the London Midland & Scottish railway, Hawkeseyes were used as platform station name signs. Made from cast aluminium, they were generally mounted on wooden boards at the end of each platform, often at an angle, so that train passengers knew the station they were entering. Originally painted with a yellow reflective background and black lettering to improve night time vision. Later, maroon background was used and when the ex LMS stations were taken into BR(W) ownership, those were painted a chocolate brown background with cream lettering.
