Manufactured by Brecknell Munro & Rodgers Bristol England and supplied for use on stations by the British Booklet Matches Ltd, these initially dispensed two booklets of matches for 1d and later one box of matches for 1d. North Eastern railway framed and glazed notice for the Trimming and Lighting of Lamps dated 1904. Lists information on Roof Lamps, Tail Lamps, Side Lamps and general instructions, recovered by the vendor from Barnard Castle Station in 1966. In original glazed frame with Station Master, Barnard Castle written on the back of the notice. A rare survivor in very good condition measures 20in x 14in. Definitely one for the lamp collectors.

Previous winners are shown on hallmarked silver discs which include St Pancras, Camden, Willesden, BRB Headquarters, Bedford and the last winner in 1993 Melton House. Sir Thomas Williams was a director of the London & North Western Railway. Measures 36in x 29in and is in very good condition.

London & North Western Railway Illustrated Address to Elijah Copping on his retirement from the Police Detectives Department April 1904. Framed and glazed 20.5in x14.5in with very attractive design colours plus interesting signatures. Elijah Copping is mentioned in the BTP records as having helped investigate the murder of Thomas Hibbs in 1902 and had also taken part in the investigation into the murder of Detective Sergeant Robert Kidd in 1895 and helped to bring his killers to justice. On reverse (also glazed) is a LNWR advertisement for Omnibuses To / From Euston Station to Charing Cross (SE&CR), Waterloo (L&SWR) plus Family Parties, each with times and prices.

The box has been nicely restored and comes complete with its original cast iron stand that measures 55in tall. GWR 19th Century Locomotive brass Splasher Coat of arms, as fitted to the Dean Singles, it measures 11.5 inch diameter and is in ex loco condition. A wonderful and historic survivor not to be confused with the later Swindon re cast brass plates that were sold in the 1980's, the originals have a hollow back and the paintwork is to a much higher standard.

Qty 42 b/w Photographs of Wartime bomb damage to locos and infrastructure. Some have the official Southern Railway General Managers Office, Waterloo stamp on rear along with the details. Includes Tunbridge Wells Loco Shed November 20th 1940. Portsmouth Harbour Station January 1st 1941, Malden Manor damage to line November 23rd 1940, Nine Elms Loco Shed September 30th 1940 etc. Some locos obviously took direct hits, Schools Class CLIFTON was wrecked and one photograph even shows a close-up of the well twisted nameplate lying on the floor.

GWR collection that belonged to the Chief of Police Mr J.H. Matthews comprising: GWR wooden Police Truncheon in very good used condition with 'Parker Holborn Maker 233' on bottom of handle; General Strike May 1926 hallmarked silver official GWR Presentation Tray bearing his name; Glass Hip Flask in an ornate metal sleeve engraved 'JHM Cardiff Station GWR'; an oval metal plate with an etched negative of his head and shoulders which matches the newspaper cutting photograph (2nd left) when he attended the presentation of gold medals and ambulance awards at Southall GWR First Aid Class; a box of Great Western Railway Macniven & Cameron No 1 Pen Nibs. Some photocopy paperwork relating to the history accompanies. J.H. Matthews, who had been the GWR Senior Detective since 1912, took charge of the Special Police and the Traffic Police when they were unified in 1918. Designated Chief of Police, he was first of only three to ever hold the post, the later two being George Stephens and then Arthur Lane. A very desirable and historic lot.
