Robert Johnson is recorded as being born c1804/5 and in the 1841 census is a publican, In the 1851-71 censuses he is recorded as being a guard who lived in Cockermouth, so the presentation would have been around 1874, he died in Whitehaven aged 79 in 1883. A brass and mahogany cased chain driven fusee Guards Watch dating from circa 1847, this important timepiece was used by Guards, set and locked at Cockermouth or Workington, then travelled with the Guard so he could confirm the time at the Stations at which they stopped. Certainly in use before Greenwich time signals were sent by Telegraph. The Brass case is hand engraved to the rear Presented by the C&W R Co to Robert Johnston after 27 years faithful service, this confirms that his watch was presented to him on retirement. The movement fully signed Reid & Sons Newcastle on Tyne is in clean and working condition.
