GWR Brass Cashbag Plate PRESTON HALT TO PAIGNTON. It is doubtful whether a rarer plate will ever come onto the market because the Great Western Railway opened a platform to serve the popular Preston Sands beach in Paignton on 24 July 1911. It was mainly served by the steam rail motors that had been introduced earlier that year to compete with the trams then running between Paignton and Torquay. It only lasted a few years, being closed on 21 September 1914. A truly unbelievable survivor.

Initially allocated to Kings Cross, it wasn't long before a move to Grantham ensued. Later years saw the allocation change to Doncaster and withdrawal finally came in January 1965. The plate is in excellent condition and the crest too is superb. Hand painted on the back, just visible beneath the patina is 'Left Hand'. Possibly face restored a long time ago. Locomotive Plaque, ex LNER A4 4-6-2 Pacific 60024 KINGFISHER. Both plaques were presented to British Railways by the Royal Navy on 21st October 1954 having been removed from the R.N Patrol Vessel L70, H.M.S. Kingfisher. The plaques were fitted at Haymarket in a central position on each side of the boiler casing. There is a good quality image in the RCTS Locomotives Of The LNER Part 2A showing the lack of face screws on the frame (it was screwed from the side), the embossed nature of the kingfisher bird and the beaten, copper frame. Note: 60024 was built in December 1936 and withdrawn in September 1966.

The set is totally original, with the crest having some minor restoration, as was usual with these and both plate and scroll are face restored. One of only three WCs with two lines, the others being Blandford Forum and Blackmoor Vale. The Shield with the Devon Crest is ex loco on the rear and still retains its original, thin steel retaining band which has severe corrosion at the base. The hairline cracks in the main nameplate had been 'stopped and plugged' by Eastleigh which did the trick because judging by the patina on the back, it was carried until withdrawal without further problems.
