Great Western & London North Eastern Joint Railway Uniform Jacket with qty 6 brass GW & LNER Buttons. Made by J. Compton, Sons & Webb Ltd., it is in excellent condition throughout and retains the original label assigning to J.H Ayres, Loader, at High Wycombe Station. James Henry Aires, who was at High Wycombe then Slough during the war, was the Grandfather of the Vendor.

Great Northern Railway Salters Spring Balance with large hanging hook. A wonderful survivor weighing up to 100 lbs. The brass face has the makers name and Staffordshire Note Trade Mark. It is also, importantly stamped with the Queens Crown and 'VR 239LC'. On the rear is a lovely, brass plate stamped GNR 164. Ex Kings Cross Station Engineering Department.

Poster, Southern Railway Q/R 'HMS Victory - Portsmouth' A magnificent image of the ship, from a painting by Kenneth Shoesmith. Below is a Stagecoach with the wording 'The Old Portsmouth Road' and next to that is a single Electric Carriage and the words 'The new road to Portsmouth' Along the bottom in pseudo sunshine lettering Southern Electric with flash. A wonderful poster in vivid colour and very good condition with the exception of a clean, 10 tear left centre edge, not impinging the image and surely repairable. Published by Southern Railway Advertising and printed by Waterlow.

Cabside Numberplate 6820. Brass construction, ex GWR 'Grange' Class 4-6-0 Locomotive KINGSTONE GRANGE. Built Swindon in January 1937, first allocation Newport Ebbw Junction. A well traveled loco which was also allocated to Pontypool Road, Exeter, Worcester, Newport and Cardiff. Finally stored at Swansea East Dock and scrapped at Birds, Morriston in October 1965

Photographs, qty 7 albums (holding approx 1000 sleeves and approx 800 photographs, although not actually counted). Predominantly ex GWR locos but some variety from other companies. A wonderful collection of good quality, 'bought' photographs, mostly b/w but some colour. The Vendor had attempted a complete run of ex GWR 'named' locos during BR days and was not far from completion. Pure nostalgia and an interesting project to complete. Also Photographs, Slides, Postcards and miscellany in a box. Includes approx 500 mainly b/w good quality photographs (with some interesting colour photos): 60 Colour Rail Slides: Assorted Tickets and letters from BR days. Also 3 Birmingham Post Posters from the 1960's advertising the very early Tyseley Open days. Also a couple of prints including a Cuneo of the Jubilee at Tyseley. GNR or possibly LNER Kings Cross Porter Badges, qty 3 mounted on card. Two have original rear clip, the third just the hooks. All three are absolutely original with the original felt cloth in the centre, behind the numbers. Each and every porter at Kings Cross had to wear one of these for identification purposes. Not in Froggatt, certainly of significant scarcity even though here are 3 in one go.

A wonderful, framed and glazed item which has a number of Broad Gauge Vignette images encircling a central image of a couple of Broad Gauge Locomotives. Dated June 1886 originally, this was presented to William John Winter on the 8th November 1911.

Weymouth & Portland Railway Brass Uniform Button. A delightful example of this little known Company which opened in October 1865 and was leased jointly to the GWR and LSWR. Similar to Froggatt Plate 45/17 but as the text in the book states, slight differences in the lettering on different issues can be observed This particular 16mm example is quite stunning.

LSWR Brass Theodolite housed in a wooden carrying box. This wonderful instrument is engraved with the makers name Elliot Bros., London and is also engraved in large lettering L & S W Ry No 1. Measuring 15 in length with focus barrel retracted. The brass mounting plates are in the carrying box but there is no tripod. Fixed to the top is the levelling bubble but this has long broken and could, no doubt be repaired. The makers plate is missing from the box lid but because of this, the LSWR stamping is clearly visible, indeed the railway may well have removed the makers plate to stamp this. In all, a museum piece of railway history.

Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Engineering Tools from Horwich Works. A wonderful little collection of 9 items of considerable importance, rescued from the Works when they became of no further use. There are 2 Axle Box Gauges, the first is stamped 'Steam Motor Rail Coach No 9182' , the second is stamped 'Ldg & Inter Axlebox 0-6-0 Shunting Tanks, Distance Between Feet For Keep'. Then there are 3 male/female threaded devices, all beautifully stamped with company initials (one stamped LMRH, London Midland Railway Horwich). Finally, 4 Wheel Profile Gauges, not company marked apart from one LMRH again, but stamped with some details.

BR(W) Chain Driven, Fusee Movement Time Recorder Clock by The Gledhill - Brook Time Recorders Ltd., Huddersfield, Halifax, London & Birmingham. Complete with all mechanism and ribbon and all necessary keys. Ivorine plate beneath dial reads 'BR-W 5713. Also accompanied by an interesting BR Label indicating it was used at Plymouth, Post Office Road. In full working condition.

Interesting Pocket Watch with enamel dial bearing a turn of the century 2-6-0 locomotive and 4 wheel tender. Bears the makers name EKB Chronome27tro above the locomotive. Key wind mechanism but unsure whether fusee or not. The case is hallmarked with the Chester mark for 1904. In a non-original case of Bennett Watch maker & Goldsmith bearing a reverse label to a gentleman in Aston Green and dated 1867. Not official railway but quite superb nevertheless and in working order.

LMS Signal Box Board MOW COP. Ex North Staffs Railway location between Kidsgrove and Congleton. Cast letters on wooden backboard. Mow Cop was considered an unimportant station and there were, at one time two boxes here, but little is known about the other one which was named Mow Cop Sidings. A good image of the signal box appears on John Hinsons superb web site (www.signalbox.org) Extremely good, ex box condition.

LBSCR 3 Aspect Handlamp 'SHOREHAM PER. WAY'. A wonderful lamp, complete with an SR reservoir and SR burner. Bears the large, brass, fully titled plate on the side and also a brass 'B' plate on the reducing cone. On the collar is the original location plate 'P. WAY DIV. HORSHAM'. The relocation plate, larger than the original, is on the opposite side to the LBSCR plate. A quite magnificent lamp with two locations. Sadly painted yellow by the vendor but this doesn't detract one bit from such a wonderful survivor.

Brass plated on the front dome 'London & North Eastern Railway KINGS X 3360 R' . Front, red bullseye lens, rear and side bracket. Complete with original, LNER reservoir and a later BR burner. Wonderful, original condition.

GWR Station Cabin Log Book for the Wolverhampton & Birmingham District. A stunning survivor of significant importance. Each page is preformatted with hand written details of each Signal Cabin starting on the first page with Fosse Road Cabin belonging to Leamington Station. It continues with the stationing of the Telegraph Inspector, Telegraph Lineman, Signal Fitter, Signal Inspector. The system in use, in this case Spagnoletti, Distance to Harbury Cabin. Plus details of Clearing Points, operation for Down Trains and Up Trains, where Caution Tickets are issued and then a whole page for any notes. This as quite wonderful and it has almost 200 pages so the same amount of Signal Cabins must be listed. The signalling expert must view this to appreciate its importance.

Yellow lettering on black background with a yellow border. Measures 60 x 12 with beveled edge. Would look rather nice displayed on the wall.

LMS Hotels silverplated Coffee Pot by Mappin & Webb. A stunning example with company motif in Art Deco slanted , block style engraved on the side. Lift up lid with exquisite shape and matching finial knob. Ornate handle, much in the period style and squared spout to put the final touch. In wonderful condition throughout.

LNER 9 x 5 Brass Strip number 62718. Ex LNER D49 Class 4-4-0 Locomotive, built Darlington in May 1928 and originally numbered 310 and named KINROSS-SHIRE. In 1946, received the number 2718 and later the BR number 62718 when this plate would have been added to the 9 x 5 works numberplate. Allocated to Dundee Tay Bridge, it was withdrawn in March 1961. Unfortunately the plate was prised from the 9 x 5 whilst still on the loco so both ends are broken across the bolt holes. But, it is exactly what it is and certainly a rare survivor

Smokebox Numberplate 43887. Ex Fowler 4F 0-6-0 Locomotive introduced 1922 and this particular one was scrapped at Cashmores in 1965. Allocated to Gloucester Barnwood throughout its BR lifetime. The plate comes with the original receipt from John Cashmore (bought for 25/- along with smokebox 44045, also in this auction) As the receipt shows, the plate came broken in half and the Vendor had it welded and restored.

Great Northern Railway Horse Drawn Cart Rear Lamp. A quite stunning example carrying a brass plate on the domed top. Reads : 'Great Northern Railway Company, No. 9 Horse Dept., London Gds'. Front, red bullseye lens 3 in diameter (appears to be clear from front but is in fact red), small, rectangular red glass either side. Complete with original GNR, double burner fixed reservoir clearly stamped GNR on the front. Ex Kings Cross Goods Depot from the Horse Drawn cart days of many years ago. A super lamp in excellent condition.

Small Glass Whisky Flask embossed ' Bottled By Alfred Jones, Railway Hotel, Kington' Appears to be late 19th, early 20th century. In excellent condition. An extract from the Hereford Times, 8 Sep 1888 speaks of an inquest into a railway accident, held at the Railway Tavern in Kington. Whether this became the railway hotel is open for research.

Midland Railway Silk Timetable for the Special Train conveying Her Majesty from Normanton to Derby 28th September and from Derby to Gloucester 29th September 1849. Printed on Silk by W.M.Bemrose Derby and bearing the Secretary name J.F. Bell. The train started at Normanton at 3:15 and stations listed are Oakenshaw, Barnsley, Swinton, Masbro', Eckington, Chesterfield, Wingfield, Ambergate, Belper and Derby arriving 4:55. The following day, depart Derby 8:00 and traveling through Burton, Tamworth, Hampton, Birmingham, Blackwell, Bromsgrove, Droitwich, Spetchley, Ashchurch, Cheltenham and Gloucester arrive 11:00. Notice is hereby given that any person or persons, in charge of vessels or boats, passing through this lock, neglecting to empty the lock, or failing to leave the gates and sluices in proper order, or any persons found tampering or doing any damage to the lock gates or sluices will be prosecuted. By Order'. Measures a manageable 21 x 18 with integral, cast post cap fitting on rear. Recovered from a lock on the River Ure at Newby Hall.

Worksplate Robert Stephenson & Hawthornes no 7349/1947 Newcastle Works. Ex 0-4-0ST steam locomotive, new to London County Council Horton Asylum, Epsom. Moved 1950 to Fred Watkins Engineering, Milkwall on the Sling Branch (Severn & Wye Railway) at Coleford Junction in the Forest of Dean. Sold in 1951 to Calder & Mersey Extract Co in Widnes, Lancs. Oval Brass construction, front bereft of paint but varnished, back totally ex loco.

BR(W) Enamel Station Running-In-Board PERSHORE. Couldn't get more local than this one with the station just a stones throw north of this exact location. Measures 10' x 2' but in two pieces, the bigger being 70 in length, both are 24 wide.. A replica of this was erected on Pershore Station to mark the 150th anniversary of the opening of the station. This is the original and of significant historical importance for the town.

Nameplate PURDON VICCARS. Ex Robinson 4-4-0 Great Central Railway Class D10 Locomotive number 430 built at Gorton in September 1913. Re-numbered to 2651 in 1946 and finally to 62651 by British Railways in 1948. Originally a Gorton locomotive, it moved to Annesley until 1924 and thence to Neasden. In 1942 allocation was Doncaster but in 1943 was transferred to Langwith for work on the Ordnance Trains at Ranskill. After a short spell at Sheffield and Brunswick, the loco ended its days at Northwich from where withdrawal took place in March 1953. The plate is in wonderful condition with original red painted background. Note: Purdon Viccars was a Director of the company from 1900 until 1906 becoming Deputy Chairman until 1918.

LNER Return To Kings Cross Packers Blanket. Used by the Delivery Department to throw over furniture etc. Amber colour in excellent condition and also bearing a sewn tag with simply LNER in the weave. Together with a purple GWR Sleeping Car Blanket with GWR in brown woven several times into the weave.

Cabside Numberplate 5932, ex GWR 4-6-0 Hall Class Locomotive HAYDON HALL. Built Swindon 1933 and allocated to Bristol bath Road. After reallocation to Swindon, was seen regularly on London Milk Trains. After the war, was reallocated to Old Oak Common and remained there until the twilight years of steam. A final fling between Southall, Reading, Oxford and Westbury before being withdrawn from Bristol barrow Road in October 1965. Face restored, back lightly cleaned. Despite the slight beading imperfections, this plate has been matched perfectly with the plate from the other side.

Industrial Nameplate ABERNANT. Ex Manning Wardle 0-6-0ST built 1921 and numbered 2015. Records show in 1927 it was at Cardiff Corporation Water Department, Llwynon Reservoir construction at Cefn Coed, Brecknockshire for Thomas Ward. Later to the Austin Factory at Longbridge from where the plate was obtained before being sent to J.Cashmore at Great Bridge. Rescued and sent to Newdigate Childrens Park in Birmingham in February 1964.Plate measures approx 41 x 7 and the face has been restored, back totally ex loco.

Great Northern Railway Southern C/I oval Turnout Plate number 1. Turnout Plates don't come better than this one because it is embossed at the bottom G.N.R.S and it originated from Kings Cross Station. The Vendor only cleaned this a while ago and then restored it. He said it had so many layers of paint that you couldn't make out the GNRS at the bottom. What a pity it was cleaned but it is still from that famous location, reputedly adjacent to the footbridge, witness to goodness knows what over the years.

White lettering on green background, still on its original mahogany rotator as fitted to the Destination Indicator at a number of SR Stations within the London area. Brookwood was, as well as the main line station, also the terminus for the famous Necropolis Railway.

LNWR Dining Saloon Butter Knives, a pair, both the same but bearing a different number. Manufactured by Elkington, each carries the familiar Britannia Crest on the blade and on the other side, the date 10 - 20 plus the wording 'Dining Saloon' and the number 5034 on one and 5035 on the other. A matching pair from the same, probably 10 wheel Dining Saloon used by the LNWR. Absolutely delightful and of considerable scarcity. Displayed with one knife showing the logo side, the other knife showing the number side.

ASLEF framed and glazed certificate measuring 25 x 31 approximately. Certificate has some wonderful images surrounding the central image of an early footplate crew shaking hands actually on a loco footplate. Worksplate LMS Built 1894 St Rollox. As carried by an ex Caledonian Railways 4-4-0 Locomotive Nos 12 to 18. No 12 (LMS No 15031) was involved in an accident at Glasgow Central in January 1925 and No 17 was the fastest loco on the Perth - Aberdeen section in the London - Aberdeen races of 1895. Or, Caledonian Railways 0-6-0 Locomotive Nos 199 - 204, 256 - 261, 334 -337 and 703 - 708. Oval brass construction.

Great Northern Railway Reid Telegraph Instrument. A delightful instrument with mahogany case and front shelf which is complete with brass pin holding the message to be transmitted. Beneath the tray is the sending handle which moves left and right enabling code to be transmitted. The interesting addition to this item is the original side frame bearing the location as GRIMSBY and the codes listed to Alford, Aby, Authorpe, Legbourne Road, Mablethorpe Junction, Wragby Junction, Louth South and North, Fotherby, Ludborough, North Thoresby, Holton-le-Clay, Waltham, Hainton Street, Grimsby Goods Junction, Grimsby Garden Street. Nameplate ACTON HALL, ex GWRA Hall Class 4-6-0 Locomotive numbered 4982. Built January 1931 and allocated new to Weymouth. By nationalisation, she had found her way to Goodwick and in August 1950 moved the short distance to Neyland. March 1959 saw a move to the Midlands and allocation to Tyseley. Finally withdrawn from Plymouth Laira and cut up in 1962 at Swindon Works. Clearly stamped Lot 268 and 4982 R I N on the rear indicating this was the right hand plate. Appears to be in wonderful, original condition.

Smokebox Numberplate 44045. Ex Fowler 4F 0-6-0 Locomotive introduced 1922 and this particular one was scrapped at Cashmores in 1965. Allocated to Gloucester Barnwood throughout its BR lifetime. The plate comes with the original letter of offer from John Cashmore (bought for 25/- along with smokebox 43887, also in this auction) As the letter shows, the plate came broken in half and the Vendor had it welded and restored.

Totem, BR(W) CHELTENHAM SPA MALVERN ROAD, H/F. Ex GWR station in the very heart of Gloucestershire, famous for its Regency architecture and, at one time, 3 stations. Malvern Road closed in 1966 and the lower panel of this totem was painted out and recovered for use at Cheltenham Lansdown Road. The paint over Malvern Road has recently been removed and the slightly better condition of this part can just be recognised. A wonderful totem in extremely good condition, still retaining the original bracket.

Research reveals only one, well known person of this name and that was the Australian cricketer who holds the record for most stumpings in a Test career. Royal Sun Alliance Shields, a trio. The first is alloy set separately into 3 hexagonal areas with a wooden frame. The inserts show the Sun, Castle and 3 Anchor Shield. The second is resin and has the central Royal Insurance Company Shield in red with the golden Lion & Unicorn either side and scroll beneath 'Tutum Te Sistam'. The third is also resin and is an extremely interesting plaque made for the 1945 centenary year. It shows the Royal Insurance Company 'family tree' starting at the base of the trunk with the Royal Insurance Co Crest and then no fewer than 38 subsidiary companies depicted with, predominantly circular logos. Quite a stunning piece in its own right.

Great Western Railway Indenture dated 1st October 1877 and signed in person by William Dean who at the time was Superintendent of the Locomotive & Carriage Departments of the Company. This wonderful, historic document was raised for a 14 year old, Walter Oakford, for a 7 year apprentiship in the art of Coach Finishing. Signed also by his father, Charles Romain Oakford. The front cover details the daily wage laid out for seven years starting at 10d per day rising after 7 years to 2/8d. Thick parchment paper with official Two Shillings and Sixpence Victoria Crown embossed stamp.

Southern Railway Enamel Platform Hanging Gas Lamp. A wonderful example with green enamel , small size 'Mexican Hat' shade and original, ornate shaped glass globe. Has been converted to electric with three very small bayonet fittings to simulate gas burners. Could be reverted if needed. Comes with three samll bulbs, however, the cables have been removed for safety and anyone wishing to re-instate to electric working should consult a qualified electrician. Having said that, this is quite a superb example.

LMS C/I Tenderplate No 4189 dated 1930. Ex 2-6-0 'Crab' Locomotive originally numbered 13154, later 42854. Introduced 1926, this loco was well traveled and allocations include Longsight, Rugby, Aston, Stockport and Birkenhead. Interestingly, this loco was scrapped at Crewe Works in Nov 1963 yet the plate was purchased, along with the following lot, from Birds scrapyard, Long Marston. It is evident that either the tender went to Birds separately, or, it was fitted to another 'Crab' which was scrapped at Birds.

GWR Hand Written Note Books, qty 2, written in 1942 by Chief Inspector Gillett, a notable and well known railway gentleman who worked in the Birmingham District detailing Engine Numbers and Drivers from Tyseley on specific workings with timings. Local trains only but extremely interesting. Locos include, many times in fact, 5152, 4108, 5166, 5177, 5199, 8109, 5193, 4939, 5102 etc. Most runs are Moor Street through to Stratford with all stations listed with timings. A couple of gems, together with a BR (WR) small Diary with many loco movement notes hand written and a 1955 Desk Diary and a partially completed larger diary with similar writings.
