Carriage Boards are Invariably made with wood and strengthened at the ends with a steel strip. They were affixed very simply above the carriage windows at the lower part of the curved roof. They indicated the destination to assist passengers to select their appropriate train. The majority were double-sided so that when a train reached its destination, they would flip over to indicate where the train originated and was now returning. Some boards denoted the name of the train rather than the destination. In BR days, trains such as The Royal Scot; The Caledonian; The Elizabethan; The Torbay Express; The Atlantic Coast Express and The Cunarder to name but a few, carried their carriage boards for the outward and return journey without the need to flip-over.
LNER carriage board ABERDEEN - FRASERBURGH. Double sided wood with one metal end in very good condition, measures 32.5in x 3.5in.
