South Eastern Railway 12 inch Oak cased fusee drop dial clock supplied circa 1890 by Gillett and Baxter of London. The quality chain driven English fusee movement of typical London style has rectangular plates which are held together by turned tapered pillars, these characteristics point to a clock manufactured in the period 1880-1890. The front plate is scratched with the number 722 and the back plate is stamped with the SER cartouche and G&B. The pendulum rod and bob are also stamped with the number 722. The original white enamel screen printed and hand painted dial displaying bold Roman numerals and the legend, S.R John Walker 1, South Molton St London 722.S.E, the rear of the dial is also stamped 722 A traditional English drop dial clock case manufactured from oak with a one piece turned convex surround affixed to the back box by two battens with four tapered pegs, the back box is of traditional mid to late 19TH century design with one side access door and a bottom door with the lock removed and replaced with an ornate Brass turn. The drop of the case features an oak veneer showing the Medullary rays of this type of wood the rear of the case has been branded SER and also stamped 722SE. The side door retains its original SER brass numberplate 722. The Southern clock records show that this clock was originally supplied to Canterbury West Booking Office then later transferred to Canterbury Tonfold crossing and finished its railway life at Lancing Works Progress Office. A wonderful clock in full working order complete with pendulum and key.
