SAR single language Cabside Numberplate no 570. Ex 3'6 gauge 6th 4-6-0 built as a standard passenger type for Southern African railways from the early 1890's. This one was built by Neilson Reid of Glasgow, works no. 5247 in 1898 for the Cape Government Railway and was numbered 239. In 1912 the CGR became part of the new South African Railways and the engine received this numberplate at that time which it carried until withdrawal at Cape Town in 1970. 570 had various minor improvements from the original specification and was classified class 6D by the SAR; the D suffix also categorised the other CGR later-built 6th class among the whole class of 4-6-0s.
