Poster CHESAPEAKE & OHIO RAILWAY. CHARLOTTESVILLE by BERN HILL (1911-1977) circa 1950 37.5 x 27.5 inches. Bern Hill was a graphic designer and a painter. He is best known for a series of paintings which were turned into posters for the General Motors Electro-Motive Division, all of which depicted trains coursing their way through the American countryside. In this separate series he depicts landmarks and well turned-out tourists up and down the Chesapeake & Ohio Line. Hill populates the scene with people impeccably clad in the style of their time. This poster is a view of the Charlottesville Rotunda, Thomas Jefferson designed the Rotunda as the centrepiece of his Academical Village, now the University of Virginia. It was modelled after the Pantheon in Rome and was meant to represent the achievements of the enlightened human. Mind. Jefferson died on July 4, 1826 and did not live to see the completed construction, the Rotunda was finished later that year. Condition good with some tape residue on corners.
