Nameplate DEFIANCE ex British Railways Class 50 D449 which later became 50049 Feb 1974, 50149 Jul 1987 and 50049 Feb 1989. Allocated new to D05 Stoke-on-Trent Division Dec 1968. Named at Laira Depot on 2/5/1978 without ceremony. When loco was renumbered to 50149 the nameplate had a yellow background and the ship's crest applied to one side. Nameplates were removed when the loco was withdrawn from Laira Aug 1991. Stored at Laira until sold to the Class 50 society in Nov 1991 for preservation. Has been based on the West Somerset Railway and the Severn Valley Railway and also undertaken main line duties whilst preserved. Currently based at the Severn Valley Railway and has recently been repainted into BR large logo livery. Rectangular cast aluminium in as removed condition measures 39.25in x 9.75in This is one of its original Swindon cast plates with Swindon casting pattern number in the back and traces of yellow paint under the red.
