Midland Railway Police Officer James Gates papers and notebooks with paper cuttings of railway crimes etc. An interesting insight into this particular policeman's life as an officer of the MR. Hand written notebooks and scrapbook of villains along with official MR Police Department and other papers make most interesting reading. One book is an alphabetical record of villains names, offence, sentence and other notes. Another book has newspaper cuttings of railway offences, noted - theft of tools from the MR shed Saltley - theft of a bottle of Bovril from Lawley St Goods Station. The dates indicate turn of the century up to the 1920's, much action in Birmingham and Sheffield. This is fascinating material for both the railway collector and the criminologist alike.
