GWR Signal Box Control Instrument. Dating from the late 1920s onwards, these were part of the G.W.R.'s 'Economic Maintenance System' for lighter-used single lines. They controlled ganger's locks in p.way cabins along a stretch of single line and when put into operation enabled the ganger to withdraw a circular brass key, from either a round Signal Dept release instrument, or later the 'dog kennel' type of release. At the same time the normal key token operation for the particular section would become inoperable, to protect the p.way gang as they worked.
