Before the general adoption of enamel signs, station and office premises had cast iron identification door plates affixed to the door to show the occupant or describe the use of that room. Classic, self explanatory examples being Station Master, Private, Porters, Gentlemen and Ladies. The Great Western railway and the London & North eastern railway used these more so and when the more scare appear, they command a premium. Such examples include Ladies Waiting Room, Inspector, Residence, Telegraph Linemen and Tranship Office
