Larger stations with multiple, open platforms, presented a challenge to travellers so to make it easier, wooden finger boards with painted destinations were used by platform staff to indicate the route of the next train. Often, many were housed on hinges in large receptacles and were pulled out into a horizontal position and locked until the train left. Double sided, passengers standing or walking along platforms could see at a glance if their train was about to arrive on that platform. Also some were manufactured from enamel and displayed on large indicator boards at major stations like London Waterloo and Brighton.
