Some early companies used enamel for their doorplates, in particular the North Eastern Railway, Midland Railway and Great Western Railway but it wasn't until 1948 when British Railways came into being, that there was a general move to standardise doorplates using enamel and regional colours. The latter are in the main, more collectable than all others, particularly when an oddity arises such as Lounge; Goods Enquiries; Passenger Agent and Enquiries and Reservation to name but a few. In recent years, even the more common Station Master; Private; Ladies Room etc have increased in price quite dramatically.
