The issue of uniforms to Railway Companies servants certainly instilled pride and smartness. To have buttons and badges bearing the company heraldry was considered by the wearer to cement a sense of belonging. All companies with few exceptions, produced their own buttons and many had variations within, usually to signify rank and sometimes department. Uniforms themselves are not particularly sought after, but, early smaller company buttons are rare and extremely desirable whereas the Big 4 company buttons are extremely common and worth very little. Badges have become more and more popular, cap badges in particular and unlike Big 4 buttons, enamel badges worn by BR staff are now very popular. Ticket Collector and Excess Luggage totem shaped or fishtail shaped, in different regional colours are sought after and command high prices. War Service badges are also desirable and any from a small company will generate great interest. The discerning collector is well advised to obtain a copy of the invaluable book Railway Buttons, Badges and Uniforms by David J. Froggatt.
