BR(S) enamel Signal Box sign SHAWFORD JUNCTION, in two halves, each measuring a very manageable 59 x 12. Opened circa 1891, it was the junction of the London & South Western Railway and the Didcot Newbury & Southampton Railway, the latter coming toward the junction over the Hockley Viaduct, a 33 red brick span over the Itchen; built 1880s. Last used by the railway in the 1960s. Both sections are in very good condition, requiring a basic clean. Just a couple of rusted chips on the 'Junction' portion. A scarce sign from this well known box. Note: Featured in the Sophia Loren film 'Brief Encounter' and also, the last episode of 'One Foot In The Grave' where the scene of Victor Meldrew being run over was filmed.
