178 GWR Wooden Cod Bottle Opener. A wonderful little item of considerable scarcity. Shown to a serious bottle collector, apart from correctly identifying it, was astounded to see such a gem. Wooden construction, possibly oak, it measures just under 1.75 diameter and 1.25 high. Nicely stamped GWR on the top, it actually resembles a gear knob. Inside the hollow is a protrusion which when placed on top of the cod bottle, would, with a sharp downward tap, dislodge the glass marble into the bottle. GWR Wooden Cod Bottle Opener. 193 GWR Hardback Ships Library Book, Holiday Haunts 1936. Issued by the company to the White Star Shipping Line for use in the library of the RMS Majestic. Sea green hardback cover with gold lettering Holiday Haunts Season - 1936. White Star Line RMS Majestic - England, Wales, Channel Islands & Isle Of Man together with the twin shield crest. Also on the binding Holiday Haunts 1936 and GWR . It is in extremely good condition and retains the rear wallet containing the GWR map. The Majestic, the second ship to carry the name, started life in 1910 when Albert Ballin of Germanys Hamburg America Line (Hapag), conceived a trio of great liners to rival Cunards Lusitania, Mauretania and Aquitania and White Stars Olympic, Titanic and Gigantic (later renamed Britannic). The third of these, Bismarck, was laid down at the Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg in 1913, and launched in 1914. Bismarck lay uncompleted at Hamburg throughout World War I and was ceded to Great Britain as a war reparation in 1919. Her sister ships suffered the same fate with Imperator becoming Cunards Berengaria and Vaterland the United States Lines Leviathan. Re-fitting took place and was finally completed in March 1922. Although her new owner (White Star) and new name (Majestic) were already known, she was completed in Hapags colours and with the name Bismarck on her bow and stern. After her sea trials, she was formally turned over to White Star and, while still at Hamburg, was repainted and renamed. Her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York, was on 10 May 1922. At 56,551 tons, Majestic was the largest ship in the world, and would retain that distinction until Normandies arrival in 1935. In 1934, she, like Berengaria, became part of Cunard White Star. Her final transatlantic crossing was February 1936. GWR Hardback Ships Library Book, Holiday Haunts 1936. 290 Totem, BR(M) RAINHILL, F/F. Ex LNWR station of absolute fame being the very cradle of Railways. In 1829 Rainhill, a tiny hamlet between Liverpool and Manchester was the scene of trials on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. The steam locomotive was at that time slow and extremely basic, operating at no more than walking pace. The Directors decided to offer a prize for a new locomotive capable of hauling a considerable load at a speed of at least 10 miles per hour over a distance of 70 miles. The trials were held in the October, and Stephensons Rocket amazed the world by reaching speeds in excess of 30 miles per hour and fulfilling all the required conditions. This established the steam locomotive as the prime mover for the railways which rapidly spread all over the world, and the basic features of Rockets design were incorporated into every steam locomotive ever built. This totem is in lovely condition with deep colour and shine. There is one small chip on the horizontal line above the letter A which barely detracts. Totem, BR(M) RAINHILL, F/F.
