Birmingham and Derby Junction Railway Truncheon. Truncheons for this railway follow a standard pattern and are generally made to a very high standard. Fenn Clark and Dicken both illustrate fine examples in their books (Fenn Clark page 74, number 5 and Dicken plate 10, number 1). Fenn Clark states his truncheon was issued to T. Ward and used during the Bread Riots of the 1840’s. As Ward is recorded as working with George Stevenson as his assistant it is likely that during the riots he was acting as a special constable. The B&DJR opened in 1839 running from Hampton-in-Arden to Derby. It amalgamated with the Midland Counties Railway and North Midland Railway to form the Midland Railway in 1844.

Initially allocated to Kings Cross, it wasn't long before a move to Grantham ensued. Later years saw the allocation change to Doncaster and withdrawal finally came in January 1965. The plate is in excellent condition and the crest too is superb. Hand painted on the back, just visible beneath the patina is 'Left Hand'. Possibly face restored a long time ago. Both plaques were presented to British Railways by the Royal Navy on 21st October 1954 having been removed from the R.N Patrol Vessel L70, H.M.S. Kingfisher. The plaques were fitted at Haymarket in a central position on each side of the boiler casing. Original in every way including the original backing board stamped 'TOP STARBOARD' upon which the plaque was laid and then held in place with a copper/brass frame that was screwed from the side. . The backing board was used by Haymarket to mount onto the loco and this is evident in the many photographs that exist of Kingfisher, particularly near withdrawal. The edge of this backing board bears the BR green paint in all its glory. There is a good quality image in the RCTS Locomotives Of The LNER Part 2A showing the lack of face screws on the frame (it was screwed from the side),  the embossed nature of the kingfisher bird and the beaten, copper frame. Southern Railway double sided, wooden platform fingerboard, both sides read ALL STATIONS TO SOUTHAMPTON TERMINUS. Research has shown that this is from Alton Station on the now re opened Watercress Line. The Train stopped at Medstead, Ropley, Alresford, Itchen Abbas, Winchester City, Shawford, Eastleigh, Swaythling, St Denys, and Northam. Southampton Terminus closed in 1966 and is a very difficult name to find on any signage.
