During his most prolific years he drew for most of the quality periodicals. Through line and tone he was able to convey the full range of human emotion to maximum comic effect. Frustrated by ill health from army service in the first World War he contributed by raising the spirits of officers and men alike through his inspirational drawings. Throughout the 20's and 30's the popularity of the "Man Who …." Series, published first in the 'Tatler', raised his status to that of the highest paid and most copied humorist of the time. His most famous of all was 'Coughs & Sneezes Spread Diseases'. In retirement he painted quality pictures of the English countryside and Mediterranean life.

BR Station Platform Lamp Diffuser HARROW & WEALDSTONE, maroon raised lettering on opaque white background. Excellent example measuring 69" x 9" which was the regulation size for these along the West Coast Main Line. They did of course, replace Totems on many of the stations and when they come complete with metal rim, as this one does, they make stunning light covers for the workshop, garage or railway room. This location, north of Euston was the location of the train disaster in 1952 when Duchess 'City Of Glasgow' ran through a red signal, into the rear of a commuter train. The resulting mayhem was exacerbated by a double-headed express, headed by the Turbomotive Princess Royal 'Princess Anne' and Jubilee 'Winward Islands', ploughing into the wreckage.

Very much Art Deco and extremely rare. The historical importance is immense. The actual font design was by Edward Johnston. Johnston abandoned his medical studies in Edinburgh and set off for London to "go in for art". He was put in charge of 'illuminating' classes at the Central School of Arts and Crafts and he is considered the 'father' of the 20th century revival of formal lettering. His most well-known design is the block lettering for London Underground, which is based on Classical Roman proportions. All 19 brass letters are there.

Nameplate SIR LAUNCELOT, ex Southern Railway 4-6-0 King Arthur Class Locomotive, one of a small batch of just 10 Locomotives built at Eastleigh Works in March 1925. Numbered 455, later 30455 by BR, in the series 448 to 457 (30448 to 30457), these 10 were unique in the numbering series and also in the fact that they received G14 Drummond Tenders. It was for many years a Salisbury Loco and by 1950 had found its way to Exmouth Junction.Throughout most of the 50's it was allocated to Nine Elms and in 1958 was moved to Basingstoke. Withdrawal took place from here in April 1959 and it was cut up at Eastleigh just one month later. The nameplate is in wonderful, 'cared for' condition, nicely polished yet retaining the character of clear bolt marks and numerous knocks and dings from 34 years of service. The rear is in absolutely original, untouched condition and clearly stamped '455'. As far as King Arthur Nameplates go, this one is probably one of, if not the, most well known and desirable of all names from the Round Table. Together with Smokebox Numberplate 30455. Has been tastefully face restored and the rear has been cleaned. Bears the familiar Eastleigh Triangle within the casting, on the rear. |
